VANDYK group of companies is collaborating with Berry Road Food Co-op (BRFC) to help raise the final funds needed to open the doors of this not-for-profit grocery store in South Etobicoke. Any donation made to the BRFC will be matched dollar-for-dollar by VANDYK.
BRFC will be the very first food-coop to open in Etobicoke. Funding for BRFC is nearing completion with more than $1 million secured that will be going towards future rent subsidy and completion of interior space. VANDYK and BRFC have started a FundRazr page with a goal to raise $50,000 by January 1, 2019. Once matched by VANDYK, BRFC will have an additional $100,000, going a long way to help cover start-up operating costs including training, initial stock, point-of-sale customization, in-store marketing, and to ensure that salary costs are securely backed for our first few months of operation.
“VANDYK is proud to have Berry Road Food Co-op as an anchor tenant within our community development, Backyard Neighbourhood Condos,” says John C. Vandyk, President & CEO of VANDYK, “we truly believe that BRFC will enrich the already vibrant and diverse Etobicoke community.”
BRFC’s mission is to provide access to healthy, local and sustainable food to Etobicoke’s diverse residents in a way that balances the interest of shoppers, local food producers, workers and community partners.
Youth programming will be offered to engage young members in healthy food practices. The store will also sell fresh and convenient “take away” meals and host food education classes like cooking, canning and food preservation.
James Partanen, Executive Director of BRFC, is leading this initiative along with a dedicated volunteer board of directors.
“ BRFC is a forward-thinking response to basic needs of food security and providing overall education, while at the same time attracting a broad spectrum of shoppers including those with a little more disposable income. A very cool mix to bring people together.”

Our mission is to provide access to healthy, local and sustainable food to Etobicoke’s diverse residents. Unlike many big grocers, we’re owned by the people who shop and work in our store! As a not-for-profit grocery store, we aim to balance the interests of shoppers, local food producers, workers and community partners that share our goals.
We envision a thriving community food hub that supports a healthy local food culture by emphasizing democratic access to healthy food for all, direct community education and participation in the food system, and economically and environmentally sustainable food practices.
