VANDYK Group of Companies recently celebrated a major milestone in its upcoming Backyard Neighbourhood Condos community in Etobicoke. The GTA developer marked the commencement of construction of The Shoppes at Stonegate with an official groundbreaking ceremony attended by VANDYK staff, tenants, trade partners, purchasers, City Councillor Justin Di Ciano and MPP Peter Milczyn.
“This is a momentous occasion, not only for VANDYK Group of Companies but for the long-standing Sunnylea-Stonegate neighbourhood,” said John C. Vandyk, President and CEO of VANDYK. “It’s the start of something really special for this community.”
Located at the corner of Berry Road and Stephen Drive in south Etobicoke, Backyard Neighbourhood Condos is situated on the site of a former 50s era strip mall. Since purchasing the land in 2013, VANDYK has been dedicated to creating a vision that would revitalize the community hub by introducing new residential units, retail and medical services.
As the retail anchor of the development, The Shoppes at Stonegate is a major component of that vision, housing approximately 32,000 square feet of commercial space within a warehouse heritage-inspired building. One of the anchor tenants is The Berry Road Food Co-op, a not-for- profit grocer that will focus on providing local and affordable food options to the surrounding community.
“The Food Co-op, will offer a place where farmers can provide their organic foods, people can shop for their groceries, and even participate in a community kitchen,” said Di Ciano. “It’s really going to transform the Stonegate area and for that we are really excited and proud to have them here.”
Another major tenant is the Stonegate Community Health Centre (SCHC) which has leased the entire second floor of the building. The SCHC has been providing health care services to local residents since 1992 and with the larger space, the organization will be able to provide medical care to a far greater amount of people. Together with the food co-op, the SCHC will be working to bring healthy, accessible food options and wellness programming to the area.
“The partnership with VANDYK has allowed us to ensure that the Stonegate Community Health Centre stays as a vibrant central facility in this community,” said Milczyn. “I’m very proud of the fact that our provincial government has provided $3.7M to the SCHC to ensure that they stay in this community with better facilities and even better services than what they’re providing now.”
The Humberside — the first residential building in the community — will be built on the southeast corner of the site and will consist of a Kohn Architects-designed six storey condominium. Clad in a mix of classic brick and expansive glass, the exterior of the building boasts a timeless design punctuated by glass-railed balconies and terraces.
Amenities include an executive concierge, state-of-the-art fitness centre with yoga room, party room with terrace and an exquisite rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the Humber River and Toronto skyline.
Although the development is already over 80 per cent sold, there’s still a wide selection of suites to choose from. Designed by the award-winning design team at U31, the homes feature spacious layouts with open kitchens and living rooms, and luxury finishes like nine foot ceilings, wide plank laminate flooring, contemporary two-tone kitchen cabinets and modern straight edge quartz countertops. A stainless steel appliance package is also standard and comes complete with a counter depth 24-inch fridge and dishwasher, 24-inch smooth top range and 30-inch over-the-range microwave with hood fan.
Prices at Backyard Neighbourhood Condos start from the mid-$200,000s. To learn more about the development, be sure to register online or visit the sales centre at 188 The Queensway, open Monday to Wednesday from 12pm to 7pm, Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm.
